The art of flattery

Original post:  Jan 20, 2014

An ambitious young man had worked all the way from a dishwasher to become a sous chef. He knew that he wanted to become the executive chef at the country club where he worked. Unfortunately, the man who held the position was not the mentoring type. He told the junior chef that he was planning to die in his position and that he should either resign himself to his current position or start looking elsewhere.

The young man thought of a clever solution. He began to scour the want ads for other executive chef positions. However, instead of applying for the positions himself, he wrote up a glowing résumé for the current executive chef! He then sent these out to the recruiters. In short order, offers began to pour in for the executive chef. He began to enjoy this extra attention and thought he was famous. He began to ask for raises based on the belief that he was in wide demand.

After a time, the general manager tired of the act. He asked the executive chef to leave. He turned to the young man and asked if he could take over while they searched for a new executive chef and remains there until this day.
